Ask The Experts About Mobile Phones On Sale Online

Chris asks…

Do online prepaid phone cards need to be reported on a tax return?

I purchased some prepaid cards last year online for t-mobile. They charged me 7% sales tax on it, but I know that new jersey requires that you report it because it wasn’t taxed by the state of new jersey. I don’t know if I need to report it because I’m not sure if t-mobile charged me New jersey sales tax.

admin answers:

If you live in NJ and they charged sales tax, they collected the NJ sales tax from you. T-Mobile has operations in virtually all states so they will charge the appropriate sales tax based upon your billing address.
